Jay Pather, *1959 in Durban (ZA), lives and works in Cape Town (ZA)
Jay Pather is the founder of the "Live Art Workshop” in Cape Town in collaboration with Pro Helvetia. He is a choreographer, multimedia artist, curator and professor. He teaches at the University of Cape Town, is director of the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (Cape Town, ZA) and artistic director of the Siwela Sonke dance theatre (Durban, ZA). He holds an MA in dance theatre from New York University. His work has traveled widely and goes beyond the boundaries of disciplines, regions and cultures. Since 1984 he has been working with visual artists, architects and town planners and presents his intercultural performances in the public spaces of various cities.
As curator, he worked for the Infecting the City Public Art Festival, the ICA Live Art Festival, the festival "Afrovibes" in Holland, the Biennal of Body, Image Movement in Madrid, the Festival of the Future City (GB), Independent Curators International (USA), at the Haus der Kunst (Munich), at Spielart in Munich and at Zeitz MOCAA (Cape Town). He was chairman of the jury for the International Award for Public Art (Brazil), was named an honorary member of London University and awarded the Order of the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.
