DARREN ROSHIER
Performance: Sun. 4.10.2020, from 5pm, Arsenic Lausanne
Darren Roshier, b. 1990 in Vevey (CH), lives and works in Vevey (CH)
Darren Roshier defines his work as playing with parameters. He calls into question the relationship between various dualities, like success and failure, language and form, authenticity and copy. After earning a BA in visual arts at the Ecole Cantonale d'Art du Valais (ECAV), Roshier joined the RATS group, which organized cultural events: artists' residencies, exhibitions, concerts, conferences, etc. His involvement in local associations drew the attention of local politicians, who asked him to sit on the municipal council of Vevey. By sitting on various committees, he learned to understand the system better.
Darren Roshier's inspiration comes from the multiplicity of his roles. As a politician he concentrates on the political system, as a curator he concentrates on the format of the exhibition, and as an artist he concentrates on how his status is represented: message, image, success and failure, history and even the way he creates his own myth. Concretely, he deals with everything that goes into the artistic phenomenon. To that end, he adds a burlesque dimension based on temporal and contextual shifts.
Darren Roshier studied design in Ghent (BE) and visual arts at the Ecole Cantonale d’Art du Valais (ECAV). From 2011 to 2017, he sat on the municipal council of Vevey, in 2012 he joined the RATS group and in 2015 participated in the Bureau Culturel in Lausanne. From 2015 to 2016, he was a guest artist at the far°, Festival des Arts Vivants, Nyon, and in 2014 was awarded the Kiefer Hablitzel Prize.
